I JOINED The Daily Telegraph in Sydney as News Editor and won several awards for my reporting before being promoted to Assistant Editor (News). In 2005, News CEO John Hartigan asked me to launch websites for the five metro newspapers in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
The objective was to create an online brand business to bolster the digital reach business run by News Digital Media.
Within six months, we launched all six sites, hired new staff and retrained 200 reporters and sales staff around the country.
I then took control of www.dailytelegraph.com.au as a case study to develop the traffic growth and revenue strategies which are now used nationwide.
I reported to the News Limited board and www.dailytelegraph.com.au went into profit inside 18 months with 3.5 million monthly readers and revenues of nearly $2 million.
Five years later, all the newspaper sites nationwide are in profit and writing multi-million dollar profits.
